SOME OLD...SOME NEW.
It is interesting and fond to know that Greensleeves has now issued, back to back, Sizzla records that obviously comprise of old material and new material (the first being Ghetto Youth-Ology (2009), followed by this release, Crucial Times (2010)). Ghetto Youth-Ology is more or less a compilation of old/new songs, even re-recorded songs produced by Melbourne "Dusty" Miller of the Firehouse Crew. As for Crucial Times, the songs listed as 'There's No Pain' and 'Get Rid Ah Dem' have already been released on either cd or 7" format in the past.

There's No Pain was released on Black History (2001) and, 'Get Rid Ah Dem" was released as a 7" vinyl on the Xterminator label (2001 or 2002), and produced by Philip "Fatis" Burrell. Yet credits for this particular song are being credited to Homer Haris. Additionally, 'There's No Pain' did not list any producer credits on the Black History cd release. So, maybe, Black History may have producer credits that fans are not fully aware of, such as in this case.

So, I am a bit confused as to some of these production credits and from what era these songs were originally recorded or re-recorded and released. Nonetheless, some of the songs on this collection are extremely rare, such as 'Foundation', which is addressed as being his first song ever voiced and recorded and with producer, Homer Harris. I may be incorrect of this statement however should be close enough to the conceptual thought and may be validated in the insert notes.

It is wonderful to hear that these past Sizzla releases have been issued and more recognized without the slackness of late that he has so demonstrated in the past. Additionally, ALL the songs are quite exceptional to great songs. Sizzla is the most versatile sing-jay in reggae and it is demonstrated here on Crucial Times.

While listening to Sizzla's range of melodic sing-jay tones on this release, let's hope that someday Greensleeves may decide to release any non-cd Xterminator label tracks as there are over 30-40 songs never before released on cd by the Xterminator label. This would definitely fit this trend of old and new material.

Spirit moves thru Sizzla
Absolutely incredible. I know it's a collection of previously unreleased material and not new stuff, but it's all new to me. And I'm loving it! From the fun but deeply spiritual opening of "Precious Gift" to the social consciousness (I know, big surprise) of "Crucial Times," the urgency of self understanding in "Agriculture and Education" to the lovey dovey but cool-electroness of "Charming," the playful "Jolly Good Time" and even a little drum n bass of "Sufferation and Poverty" (totally works) just to name a few, this collection never disappoints. Most everything I have of Sizzla's is amazing, and these last two collections are no exception (this and the truly inspired "Ghetto Youth-ology"). I feel the love and devotion to life and spirit flowing straight through Mr Kalonji. Highly recommended.

The Spear keeps Burning....
Self reflection doesn't happen too often in Reggae. Most careers in music don't afford the ability to produce an album which helps address how one might look back upon their journey. However, after 40 years producing possibly the greatest body of works reggae will ever see, Burning Spear, aka Winston Rodney, has come out with an album uniquely variant from his normal driving chants towards justice, righteousness and Rastafarianism.

Not to say Jah is Real isn't on the same inspirational, through provoking level that of the better known of The Spear's body of work, but overall, Burning Spear's latest album gives a glimpse into the personal outlook that Mr. Rodney has formed throughout his time in the music business.

Rodney was born in Saint Ann's Bay, Saint Ann, Jamaica, as were Bob Marley and Marcus Garvey; who both had a great influence on Rodney's life: Garvey in his philosophy, which Burning Spear greatly took to, and Marley in directly helping Burning Spear get started in the music industry by introducing him to Clement Dodd. Burning Spear was originally Rodney's group, named after Jomo Kenyatta, the first Prime Minister and President of an independent Kenya, and initially including bass singer Rupert Willington, later expanding to include tenor Delroy Hinds. As fame took hold the name of the group gradually became synonymous with Rodney.

Burning Spear has been one of the strongest proponents of Marcus Garvey's self-determination and self-reliance for all African descendants, thus leading to several album releases in commemoration of the Jamaican activist.

Appropriately, Mr. Rodney's autobiography is through song in Jah is Real. Who wants to read when they can listen to it from the man himself? As if the feelings from his first Jam Cruise could be applied throughout his own career, which is provided on the surprisingly joyous first track, Mr. Rodney gives a satisfied look back upon what he has seen and experience, subdued consistently has he has been the past 40 years.

Having put out countless albums and known as the undisputed best live reggae show there might ever be, Mr. Rodney has done alright for himself. Navigating through the sharks of the music industry, the false friends, and simply fraudulent dealings, he can embrace his faith that "Jah is Real" as he looks back with a justified sense of satisfaction at the satisfaction he's brought to his legion of dedicated fans.

With legendary bassist Bootsy Collins peppered throughout and the Late Show's Gospel Choir providing back up singers, Jah is Real will be a lasting testament to Burning Spear's remarkable career. Despite the obvious antipathy he may feel towards producers (there is a song called wickedness which addresses such thoughts,) and others he has run across along the way, it is a joy to be able to look back with The Spear and feel the genuine satisfaction that shines through when he reminisces. Always a bonus, the reggae beats are always top notch, and there might not be a reggae singer with a more perfectly timed stoic delivery.

Old and tired
As a long time Spear fan who hails from Africa, this latest album fails to deliver. It's mediocre. And OK is not OK Mr Rodney. I'm sure it must be difficult to deliver greatness each time. But I found this CD very formulaic...same old approach to the lyrics and pieces lacking that biting Spear melody. Come Spear...take a break and don't go back into the studio unless you can deliver something fresh in your vintage style.

JAH IS REAL, is Burning Spear's second Grammy Award Win for Best Reggae Album of the Year and his 12th Nomination overall, Someone once told me the best artists are the ones that get Nominated many times and seldom win, well Reggae Legend BURNING SPEAR falls into that category, you know when you buy a Burning Spear Album you are going to get a masterful piece of work from top to bottom, he has a talent for bringing in the best musicians, and at almost 64 years old his voice is still intact and delivers a powerful message of self determination, self reliance, and Love and Peace, I can't leave out that this is a Independent Release, so if you buy this album there is NO Record Company robbing Burning Spear of his royalties. A Brit said it best: incandescent songs transcending genres
After hearing Local Natives play Los Angeles several times, I couldn't wait for Frenchkiss Records to release its USA version of Gorilla Manor next February, so I bought Infectious Records' EU version that dropped last month. (How ironic they've blown up huge in Europe and are still relatively unknown in the States!)

I have to thank a Brit called "The Wolf" for writing the following review of Gorilla Manor and Local Natives; The Wolf said it better than I could:

"Glorious Gorillas in Our Midst

Abso-blinkin-lutely loving this every-which-way. You're going to love it too. Promise.

As incandescent a bunch of songs as I've heard this year and there are a whole healthy dozen of them to be getting on with.

Local Natives hail from Silverlake, California, U.S.A.

They are Taylor Rice (guitar/vocals), Kelcey Ayer (keyboards/vocals), Ryan Hahn (guitar/vocals), Andy Hamm (bass) and Matt Frazier (drums) and together they make a distinctive and beautiful sound.

This is tricky stuff to pin-down so I'll leave it for someone more gifted in the realms of genre sub-divisions to fix this for us later.

What I found here transcends genre in so many ways.

It is BIG music. Heart-warming music. Enveloping and uplifting music. The melodies are complex and absorbing; the singing fresh and vividly alive. These young gentlemen are creating sounds of true substance!

You could plunge in anywhere really and be lifted up by the pure energy and enthusiasm of their committed performances.

Let me tell you about a few of these wonderful compositions.

'Camera Talk' manages to combine a viscerally raw rhythm, under-produced and untainted in the best possible way, with an intoxicating melody and delicious vocal harmonies.

The high-flying violin lifts the energy straight through the roof.

The spirit of CSN&Y lives on in 'Cards and Quarters'. Mr. Frazier's drums hold down a strong but simple beat around which the song unfolds in evermore complex layers. The last chiming chord hangs in the air like the aftertaste of a half-remembered dream.

There is a dream-like quality running through much of this album.

'Airplanes' is unquestionably one of the project's finest compositions. Good-humoured and uplifting in equal measure, I found myself completely (and willingly) swept away by the ensemble's prodigious musicality.

'Sun Hands' has so much passion it is at risk of spontaneously combusting and 'World News' is chock-full of a jolly kind of goodness rarely captured by any band in any time you might care to imagine. Joyful, rapturous stuff!

I'll shut up now !

It's good. It's very, very good ! It's the kind of music to make all of our lives just a little bit richer and more bearable.

(Oh Heck! Sorry I just can't help it.....'Shape Shifter' made just about every hair on my body - from nose to tail - stand to attention!)

Originally erected as a Spanish Tavern in the 1750s, Preservation Hall is a modest French Quarter structure. The building has no running water or air conditioning, and the only seating accommodations are six benches and a few cushions strewn about the worn wooden floor. Its raw and weather-beaten exterior remains unpainted.
A half-century later, Preservation Hall continues to ensure the cultural legacy and the future of this beautiful tradition by allowing young and old to collaborate together.
In the spirit of New Orleans, legendary and emerging artists donated their time to travel to New Orleans to record this special compilation album benefiting Preservation Hall and the Preservation Hall Music.

Lackluster
I awaited the arrival of this new album with rabid anticipation because I knew it would include Metal Bird, which was a jaw-dropping opener to ASMZ's set last time they passed through New York. It turns out to be a bit of a letdown. Clearly the intensity of their live performance isn't to be expected, but the album overall lacks the dissonant drive and ragged momentum that characterize past efforts. It seems to be missing a creative spark and sense of mood, almost as if these were outtakes that never quite fit anywhere previously and are now being released out of obligation.

I've never had the sensation of listening to an ASMZ song before that I just wanted to skip, but I could pretty easily skip any of these. Even Metal Bird is too sanitized, too ordinary in this recording. The new drummer, who infused the band's sound with unbelievable vitality on tour, seems way too conservative in the studio. The string performances have no edge to them at all; they could easily have been created electronically. I'm very interested to hear how these songs work live -- perhaps the performance will offer fresh perspective for listening to the album.

Almost too upbeat!
I'm a huge fan of HIM, have been for the last decade. I was very disappointed with the last album and really looking forward to this one. I must say... Gone are the days of Love Metal & Razorblade Romance. This new album is really upbeat, pop, pretty. It doesn't mean I don't like it, because I do. Its just a new direction for the band and I hope they have great success with this one. See you on tour!

pleasently suprised
I have noticed alot of the older HIM fans like myself, are not enjoying the tracks, and I will admit to being taken off Guard. BUT I LOVED IT!! and for the ones saying its not him, ville sounds different and so on, he is! He sobered up, and put his self out there in this album alot more that the others, and i give him major credit for it. It is painful to be so raw and to expose yourself like that. To the people who are criticizing the direction the band has taken: have you never made a change in your life? Have you ever shown a side of your personality that people usually dont see? I bet you have. I adore this album, and I cant wait to see them live in april! <3 HIM

Enjoyable for Something That's Different.
When first hearing the first single "Heartkiller," I could already sense that HIM might be going for a pop feel. Maybe leaning towards the days of "Dark Light," where through MTV2 and Bam Margera, HIM was reaching out for a bigger audience outside of us core group of fans who knew them since "Greatest Love Songs 666." While unsure on how to feel about "Heartkiller" at first, like with most bands I love; I gave it a chance. Listening it to quite a few times and seeing the music video made the song grow on me.

Upon picking up and listening to the album today, "Screamworks" gives somewhat a variety of songs that move from one side of the spectrum to another. Songs like "Heartkiller," "In Venere Veritas," and "Scared to Death" gives a pop feel. "Katherine Wheel," "Like St. Valentine," and "The Foreboding Sense" still have some of the love metal feel I've come to be familiar with. "Ode to Solitude" and "In the Arms of Rain" sound like something that could come from the Depeche Mode.

While the pop songs sound kind of kitschy, Ville's romantic lyrics are still dominate throughout. One of my favorite lyrics so far comes from the song "Disarm Me (with your Loneliness)," which still shows the darkness and tragedy that comes with love. "Three Seven into three sixes again you laughed in my face when I told you how much it hurts." Though the sound is different from anything you and I have heard, Ville's poetry still shows if you can get past the music.

Overall I throughly enjoyed the album. The second disc on the special edition is great even though they are just basically acoustic versions of the 13 songs. It's worth a listen. In addition, if you want some live tracks, iTunes has "Heartkiller" and "Love the Hardest Way" from Helldone 2009 for download. In comparison though to other albums such as "Venus Doom," and "Razorblade Romance" it does fall behind a few steps musically. I enjoyed it all the same though and am looking forward to listen to these songs live when I see them in concert in April.

Well done H.I.M.
H.I.M. has done it again. Screamworks is incredible. Amazing lyrics, amazing music, amazing album. The acoustic version of this album is just as awesome. Its dark and gloomy but beautiful all the same. I highly suggest this album along with every other H.I.M. album.

Enjoyably Hopeful
A few weeks ago, I logged onto Youtube to see that HIM had uploaded the single from their new album, Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice. I was, as I assume all "old HIM" fans were, terrified. Heartkiller definitely did not quell my fears, either. I was left hoping that the song was some kind of joke.

So today, more out of obligation than actual want, I went out and bought the album- knowing full well that I would listen to it once, make fun of it, and promptly lose the disc.

Surprisingly, though, that wasn't the case. Let me just give you the most basic of reviews:

The songs are silly. Sometimes the lyrics are just plain awful. Ville's is, apparently, attempting some kind of American accent to attract fans, but the accent basically means he stresses his "ers" to the point of comedy.

Most of the songs sound like some tragic combination of Billy Idol's White Wedding and The Beach Boys.

But even I, the most staunch of "old HIM" fans, cannot bring myself to hate it.

This album, somehow, has qualities that redeem the fundamentally bad tracks.

Just listen to the chorus on "In Venere Veritas." Linde's following of Ville's vocals? Genius. Gorgeous.

Somehow, in this cesspit of pop musical capable only of the producer who brought us The Used, Ville managed to throw in enough elements of "old HIM" to redeem the album.

In short: it's not Razorblade Romance, but it'll do.

...that doesn't mean I've decided to like Heartkiller, though.

The electrifying riffs that fly around in "Lightning's Hand" and "The Spider" show that the knack for tunes like the previous album's classic "Carry On Wayward Son" had not deserted Kansas. At the same time, thoughtful (but not saccharine) ballads such as "Dust in the Wind" and "Hopelessly Human" make it clear that there was more than flash to the band. This edition of GLASS HOUSES is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as video clips for the songs "Sometimes A Fantasy," "It's Still Rock And Roll To Me" and "All For Leyna." All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24-bit technology. As one can tell from the cover photo of a blue-jeaned, leather-jacketed Joel getting ready to throw a rock (a pun on the album title), GLASS HOUSES is the album where he attempts to lay waste his reputation as MOR balladeer. He accomplishes this feat by forging a harder, more rocking sound, with the help of guitarists Russell Javors and David Brown. Though such cuts as "You May Be Right" and "All For Leyna" are far more visceral than much of Joel's previous work, this consummate songwriter sacrifices none of the tunefulness and highly developed compositional chops that brought him fame. On "It's Still Rock And Roll To Me," Joel even reaches back to the roots of the style, celebrating its timelessness despite passing musical trends. Special Edition & Original "BAD" -- Collect both!!

When this album was first released I could not figure out why it was considered "rock" or a transition to "rock". I still can't figure it out over 20 years later. But, listening to Michael Jackson's work in 2009 underscores how sophisticated an artist and singer he really was with songs like "Man in the Mirror" and "Smooth Criminal". He was only 28 years old (or younger) when he created all of this work which was released just two days following his 29th birthday, on August 31, 1987. These songs took him into the next decade without sounding dated---that is genius!

After Michael Jackson's death, I purchased the Special Edition and a copy of the original version released in Japan. The gem on the original version is the introduction for the song "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" where he speaks a verse before he begins singing.

Don't understand why the following spoken introduction was removed from the later versions of the song:

I just want to lay next to you for awhile/You look so beautiful tonight/Your eyes are so lovely/Your mouth is so sweet/A lot of people misunderstand me/That's because they don't know me at all/I just want to touch you/I need you/I love you so much

It's a shame that Trouble never seem to get the credit or attention they deserve. Bounced from Metal Blade to Def American in the late '80s, for this album this Chicago-based quintet found a home with independent Century Media. Trouble's label really doesn't seem to matter, though: their ability to crank out some of the finest and heaviest psychedelic metal around never diminishes.

Plastic Green Head is prime stuff. While Eric Wagner's occasionally screechy vocals are an acquired taste, the superheavy gothic guitar riffage takes no getting used to. Trouble may have gone through their share of bassists and drummers, but the guitar duo of Rick Wartell and Bruce Franklin has remained intact and churning out some seriously damaging sludge since their self-titled Metal Blade debut back in 1984. Trouble does the midtempo throb grooves as well as Corrosion of Conformity or Monster Magnet, but they're versatile enough to pick up the pace when necessary. They even include covers of Carole King's "Porpoise Song" and the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows" that suitably honor the original versions--though the heavy-handed psychedelic flair is pure Trouble.

That, in fact, is what makes this band so durable: their versatility and consistency. They've always maintained their sound without being afraid to modify and improve it. Plastic Green Head may not win them a ton of new fans, but it will certainly please the converted and those in search of a solid Sabbath-influenced buzz. --Adem Tepedelen

Mercyful Fate - King Diamond Band hybrid

King Diamonds solo rlbums never really did it for me - they lacked that raw grit in the riffs - that "chunkiness" and heaviness that MF had. Also, the concept albums stories often get in the way of concise lyrical passages, as it seems he is often trying to squeeze/shriek in tons of words to tell the story to the point that it doesn't really fit within the song structure. Andy Laroque, while an absolutely remarkable soloist, is not in the same league with Sherman and Denner in the riff department - they play these angular riffs that somehow work together. So what does this all have to do with "In the Shadows"? Well, all of the aforementioned problems are completely addressed. It has themes similar to King Diamond's solo projects, but without the forced million word vocal passages, no screaming "Grandmaaaaaaaa" or "Miriammmm", or "Jonathonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn....." 50 thousand times while describing drinking tea in a wheelchair in painful detail. No Andy Laroque - along with his "I will play the obligatory riffs for this song - so as to get to my incredible guitar solo" (and they are incredible - it may sound as if I don't like him, but I do). Instead, we get the King Daimond atmosphere, the chilling lyrics, and they are spread atop a musical backdrop that is deserving of it all - Sherman and Denner are criminally underrated - a better term may be "underknown". This work strays a bit from MF's eighties products, but mostly in the lyrics componenet, as the in your face, first person, present tense Satan-Satan-Satan stuff is exchanged for a more surreal, less straight forward story based approach, which I think displays much more musical maturity which is far less campy then their older releases. I love every track on this, my favorite being The Bell Witch. Five stars (or should it be 6!)

Always Solid, but Never Really Exceptional

I was walking through the store shortly before the holidays, and I just somehow stumbled upon this CD, which I was attracted to, not because of it's quasi-gothic artistic cover commonplace with the bands I've gotten into over the past 5-6 years or so, but a sign on the front telling me that it's from a former composer of Within Temptation, which is easily one of my favorites of this list of bands I've gotten into. And so I popped it in, and I listened to it, and for the most part, my high expectations were to an extent met. All - not most, but all, of these songs have some solid rock elements, some well-composed orchestral elements, and even some slight elements of 'good' pop; that is, that slight bit of bubbly energy and an additional metalic sound, versus something that sounds like Brittany Spears. However, while this album has no real downers, I can't say that any songs really blew me away. Let's just say that on my iTunes, I've ranked all the songs a 4/5 rating, none a 5/5, none a 3/5 or lower.

There are a few slight highlights. The first song, the title song 'April Rain' keeps a nice consistent sound that's always pleasing and fun, if a tad traditional. And towards the end of the album is 'I'll Reach You', a song which sounds good for the most part, but certainly climaxes with a chorus that sounds like it's from a truly exceptional song; the problem is that the bulk of the song isn't as strong. The same, or opposite, could be said about the third song, 'Invidia' (no relation, I'm thinking, to the graphics card company NVidia), which starts off truly beautiful, almost hauntingly and mesmerizingly, but during it's chorus, turns almost nasty. The same types of problems are throughout the album - every song, pretty much, has segments that are excellent, and segments that are just good.

There is also one other thing I should mention, which is that the mixing doesn't seem that great. The mixing sounds a lot like 'Enter', the first Within Temptation CD, which was well composed as well, but certainly not as sharp-sounding as something such as their later album 'The Silent Force', or Nightwish's 'Dark Passions Play' - if you don't like those albums, just note that I'm merely pointing out the sound quality. This album is, by contrast, very light on both the lows and highs, mostly in the middle-frequency range. Luckily, it's clear enough, lacking such problems of other albums like the piano being swallowed up by the guitar/bass.

Overall a good CD - I only discovered moments ago that there was another CD previously released, so I cannot state which is superior, but I can say that if you're a fan of groups like Within Temptation, Nightwish, or particulartly Sirenia, you should get a reasonable amount of enjoyment from this.

Malachai is Hebrew for 'angel.' It's also the name of the red-haired kid from Children Of The Corn. From which the band's name is derived. Why we're not exactly sure. Malachai, strictly speaking, are a duo. They're from Bristol, England. They aren't part of a scene, but they reflect the Bristol vibe these days: groups with dubstep running through their bones, hip hop in the fingers, '60s psychedelia in the heart. At times, the album sounds like a Jamaican garage rock band. Other time it sounds like Merseybeat if the beats were supplied by RZA. Or like Dick Dale surfing the River Severn.

Vinyl LP pressing. Digitally remastered reissue of this 1992 release from the veteran noisemakers, who were born from the ashes of Alt-Rock favorites Pussy Galore. For Untitled, Royal Trux strung together eight pieces of varying vintage that clearly communicated their Rock 'n' Roll desires with the most direct approach to playing songs they'd yet taken. Royal Trux recorded Untitled as a duo, their second and last album in this configuration. Neil Hagerty handled the instruments and sang with Jennifer Herrema, taking a solo acoustic turn on 'Junkie Nurse'. 'Lightning Boxer', 'Sometimes', and 'Hallucination', all featured in the What Is Royal Trux? tour of late 1990, gained additional bite on Untitled, generally arranged with several guitars, a drum kit and their vocals. Eight tracks.
